Yolo County launches new program to encourage masking as COVID-19 cases rise

July 27,2022 - Yolo County has launched a new program to encourage the community to mask up once again.

Officials are asking businesses, schools and churches to voluntarily put up signs informing people of the current high level of transmission for COVID-19.

"We are hoping that there is a large number of people out there that if they knew there was a high level of risk they would mask," John Fout, a Yolo County spokesperson told KCRA 3 on Saturday.

The county said besides the signs outside of buildings warning of the spread, they will also distribute 20,000 free high-quality masks at all library locations in the county. Health officials recommend people to wear N95, KN95 and KF94 masks in indoor public spaces.

"Cloth masks and surgical masks don’t work nearly as well as N95, KN95, or KF94 masks against the highly infectious variants like BA.5 that are circulating now,” said Yolo County Health Officer, Dr. Aimee Sisson, in a news release. “The signs that will be posted will let people know what the risk level is so they can make an informed choice about masking when they enter a building.”
